Great article. On race: it definitely has been used that way before. I think of George Wallace saying he'd "never get out-niggered again" and then winning on segregation. Or, for that matter, Black politicians' politics of authenticity. It's definitely more subtextual most of the time now though. And it is *weird* how politicians will make extremely direct appeals to masculinity while at least talking around race.
Thanks for these newsletters. As someone who studies and teaches about the history of gender and sexuality in the US....yes, it’s everywhere, and once you see it, it’s like you’ve put on infrared glasses that you can’t take off!
I haven't watched Panic Room in years - going to add that to my "can now watch movies besides Stars Wars and Marvel and Goonies with my 14yo" list. I 100% agree on real Sudafed. I was once so tired and so sick I went to the pharmacy counter and asked for "the meth Sudafed" and that was probably not the right way to ask for it. Also, it's better to get all those germs now because he won't miss his entire year of kindergarten because he's getting them for the first time.
Ha! Great morning read as I listen to Morning Edition via KUOW (shout out to Angela King) . I am here for "Dude Off" and Lobster Magnet. Feel better. I too recently found and love Apple Classical. My classical music intake goes up when the news cycle is tough like it is right now. Carry on. Bruce in PNW
I would love for you to be on Blank Check!! Phenomenal guest 10/10
